We know there are plenty of things to do in town, but sometimes we’d like to venture out and try new things, it is vacation after all! Let’s take a look at some of our favorite Things to do in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! Nothing beats getting to enjoy the sunshine when this season finally rolls around again.
Want to see all the sights but you’re not quite ready for a hike yet? No problem at all, we’ve got you covered, and you even have a few different choices to pick from! One of the most popular driving tours we have in the park is Cade’s Cove. This 11 mile, one way loop, is one of the most popular destinations to visit, so we recommend getting there as early as possible so you can truly enjoy it and take your time. You will want to have your camera ready because not only will you be able to see some beautiful scenery, but this is also where a lot of our wildlife can be seen. From black bears to white-tailed deer, you will be able to see so many different species out in the open valley, especially if you’re there before the sun is completely up. Cade’s Cove is also full of history. Along this incredible loop are three different churches, a grist mill, and even log cabins. If it’s your first time visiting, check out this loop road guide! Don’t forget to also visit the Sugarlands Visitor Center while you’re here. Another popular driving tour is the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. This is a bit shorter of a drive, but you can still see so much beauty surrounding you while you’re passing through. While out on your adventure, you’ll be able to see mountain streams, grist mills, historic log cabins, and beautiful greenery. The best part about this particular trail is the Place of a Thousand Drips, one of most amazing waterfalls you can see in my humble opinion, so have your cameras ready. This is also where the trail heads are located for some other fantastic waterfall hikes like Rainbow and Grotto Falls. Don’t miss this one, we promise you’ll love the view from beginning to end!
Spring is one of the best times during the year to go hiking because you’re able to see the greenery coming back and wildflowers beginning to bloom! Being surrounded by the majestic Smoky Mountains definitely has its perks, you have so many different trails you can choose from. Whether you’re looking for waterfalls or wildflowers, strenuous, moderate, easy, or even kid friendly hikes, we have got you covered for all of them and then some! Since it’s starting to get warmer out, I love packing up a little picnic and finding a nice trail to hike through to a spot where I can dine with an amazing view around me. Nothing beats being surrounded by beautiful scenery and breathtaking views, you get this true sense of rejuvenation out there. Whether you’re new at hitting the trails or you’ve been coming here for years, we’re sure that this will become one of your favorite things to do while you’re here. Some of my personal favorite trails to visit during the spring are:
- Little River Trail
- Porters Creek Trail
- Alum Cave Bluffs
- Rainbow Falls
- Andrews Bald
- Rich Mountain Loop
- Grotto Falls
- Ramsey Cascades
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has over 2,000 miles worth of streams in it and fishing is permitted here year-round in open waters throughout the park. All you need to have to partake in this fun activity is a Tennessee (or North Carolina) Fishing License (if you’re 13 years of age or older) which you can actually pick up at the nearby Walmart. They supply the streams with an abundance of trout weekly and they allow fishing starting thirty minutes before sunrise until thirty minutes after sunset. You can’t beat spending a day out on the water surrounded by our beautiful mountains. Make sure to start early so you can enjoy some peace and quiet along with the fresh crisp air. We know this is a favorite activity with so many of our visitors, so we’re sure that you will have one incredible adventure outside!
