Pack up the car, put the windows down, and turn on your favorite tunes while you explore the mountains. Let’s take a look at some popular Driving Tours in the Smokies!
Cade’s Cove Loop
This scenic loop is 11 miles long and it offers a picturesque view of the mountains, and our abundance of wildlife can often be seen here as well. This is one of the most popular scenic and popular drives in the park, so you’ll want to make sure to get here early if you want to beat the traffic and hopefully see the wildlife I mentioned a moment ago. Bear, white-tailed deer and coyotes are just a few of the animals that visitors have said they saw while here! If you need a big of a break and want to stretch your legs, don’t forget to visit the Sugarland’s Visitor Center and check out their plant and animal museum. You are sure to fall in love this this incredible driving loop, so get your camera ready to snap some photos to take home with you to remember the magical sites you got to see.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
If you’re looking for a bit shorter of a drive where you can still see all the beauty around you, this is the trail for you. Located at traffic light #8 in Gatlinburg, there are plenty of signs to point you in the right direction. No matter what kind of day it is, this drive is always incredible from beginning to end. Along your drive, you’ll get to see mountain streams, grist mills, historic log cabins that you can actually tour, and of course the beautiful greenery in the spring and summer and fall colors in the autumn. My absolute favorite part of this particular trail is the Place of a Thousand Drips. If you’re a fan of waterfalls, this is one of the most gorgeous ones to view! You can also find some of the most popular trail-heads here like Rainbow and Grotto Falls. You will definitely want to add this one to your list when it’s time for your auto tour. Don’t forget that due to this being a narrow mountain road, it is closed during the winter months to keep everyone safe and sound.
Whether you’re driving from Cherokee, NC to Gatlinburg, TN or vice versa, Newfound Gap climbs about an average of 3000 feet and it’s the lowest drivable pass in the Smokies. This road shows off some of the most beautiful views that you can find anywhere in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park! There are numerous pull-over areas so you can get out and stretch your legs and take some incredible photos of all the gorgeous scenery around you. You will also come across the Rockefeller Memorial which is where, on September 2nd, 1940, President Roosevelt dedicated the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This special memorial is our way of thanking him and his family for their assistance in establishing the National Park. There is so much history and beauty along this road that you are sure to add this one to your must-do list every time you’re in town.
Rich Mountain Road
While this is one of the more less travelled roads offered in the Smokies, we can still promise some breathtaking views and maybe even a bit less traffic since it’s not as crowded as the others! It’s an eight mile, one way, road and you’re able to get some of the best looks at Cade’s Cove. You will be able to get in some amazing photos while you’re taking in all the scenery along this beautiful trip that you can show to all your friends and family when you get home. They’ll be so jealous of your auto tour, we can guarantee it! Spring really is the best time to check this little road out since the weather is wonderful and you can just put the windows down and soak in all the beauty around you.
