Christmas in the Great Smoky Mountains

There is nothing quite like spending Christmas in the Great Smoky Mountains! If you love everything  about this  magical time of year, you will certainly want to visit the Pigeon Forge area in December. Around here, we go all out with the holiday spirit and there are lights around every corner. The magic of Winterfest is alive and well here in the Smokies – here are some signs that you should spend your Christmas in the Great Smoky Mountains with us.

1. You enjoy Christmas Shows

Been on the lookout for something to enjoy as a family that will bring some Christmas spirit into the season? Pigeon Forge is known for the many wonderful shows we have throughout the entire year, but the Christmas season is even more special! The whole family can experience holiday comedy shows, holiday classics and pure, clean, fun that the whole group is bound to enjoy. It can be the perfect outing while staying in the area. Dolly Parton’s Stampede show is always highly recommended as they bring the true meaning of Christmas to light during their dinner show. Another favorite is the Hatfield & McCoy Christmas Disaster show. This show has a lot of comedy, musical talents and acrobatic flair that will have everyone laughing and clapping. Not to mention the feast you receive! There are many great shows to see while visiting, but we cannot go without mentioned the Smoky Mountain Opry Christmas Show for this year. Why, you may ask? Have you ever heard of a television show that airs on NBC, called The Voice? The season 12 winner, Chris Blue, is headlining the Opry show this season. Having heard him sing myself, I can assure you that you do not want to miss the show!

2. Fan of Light Displays

Honestly, I am not sure how you can visit the Pigeon Forge/Great Smoky Mountain are and not have some holiday cheer. From the moment you get off the interstate in Sevierville, you are welcomed to town with Christmas light displays. The whole county takes part in the Smoky Mountain Winterfest. Million of lights are seen as you drive around town, including the 12 Days of Christmas as you make your way down the Pigeon Forge Parkway. Dollywood is decked out for Christmas if you have time to spend a day at Dolly’s park. Another family fun activity is visiting the Smokies Baseball Stadium in the evening as they are doing the Shadracks Christmas Wonderland currently.

3. You have Christmas Gifts to Purchase

Every year, I promise myself that I am going to be finished with my holiday shopping by the end of October and every year, I lie to myself. If you procastinate like myself or maybe you are just having some trouble finding that perfect gift for someone, shopping in the Smokies is fun and a great way to remedy the Christmas list. Many visitors, of course, take time to shop at the Tanger Outlets in Sevierville which offers some wonderful stores and finds. If you are looking for something a bit different, we have many fantastic specialty shops in the area. The Village in Gatlinburg is a great place to explore, as well as, the Great Smoky Mountains Arts and Crafts Community. You can easily find the perfect, homemade gift there. Alewine’s Pottery is always a popular stop. I always end up picking up a little something for myself when I visit there too. The Old Mill Square are in downtown Pigeon Forge, has some unique shops and near the Square, you will find a wonderful little shop called the Sandman’s Workshop. Be sure to stop in there the next time you are visiting.

4. Visit with Santa Claus

Santa can be seen in numerous locations in the area, including the Christmas Place, Shadracks Christmas Wonderland, Dollywood and Bass Pro. A local favorite is Santa’s Claus-et in Gatlinburg. Not only can the kids meet, chat and get a photo with Santa, but Santa’s Claus-et is also a wonderful shopping spot!

December in Pigeon Forge is nothing short of magical. Families can easily make a tradition of visiting the area for a few days to get in the holiday spirit and many do. The Great Smoky Mountains would love to welcome you and your loved ones this season! You never know, you may just get a white Christmas when staying in the area. The mountains usually do get some snow and are beautiful to see all covered in white! One way to guarantee you experience snow is by visiting Ober Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Snow while in the area. Ober Gatlinburg offers a variety of winter activities, including snowboarding, skiing, ice skating and snow tubing. Pigeon Forge Snow opened this past year and offers indoor snow tubing and yes, it’s real snow!
